Can I Have Invisalign Treatment While I Am Pregnant?

Pregnancy is a time full of changes — and that includes your smile! One of the most common questions we hear from expectant mothers is:

“Can I start or continue Invisalign treatment while pregnant?”

The short answer is: yes, you can — but with a few important things to consider.

At Confident Orthodontics, we treat many patients who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, and we’re here to ensure your treatment is safe, comfortable, and effective.

Is Invisalign Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes, Invisalign is generally considered safe during pregnancy.

Invisalign aligners are made from BPA-free, medical-grade plastic and do not contain harmful chemicals. They are custom-made to fit snugly over your teeth and apply gentle, controlled pressure to move them into place — without the need for wires, brackets, or any materials that might interfere with your pregnancy.

There’s no anaesthesia, drilling, or medication involved, so treatment does not pose a risk to your baby.

1. When Is the Best Time to Start Invisalign if I’m Pregnant?

You can start Invisalign at any stage of pregnancy, but here’s what we typically recommend:

A) First Trimester

If you’re in your first trimester, you may be experiencing morning sickness, fatigue, or changes in appetite. For some, wearing aligners may feel uncomfortable during this phase — especially if you’re dealing with nausea. It’s fine to wait until the second trimester to begin if that feels better for you.

B) Second Trimester

This is often the best time to start Invisalign. Most mums-to-be feel more settled, have higher energy levels, and are less likely to experience sensitivity or nausea. You’ll also have time to adjust to your new routine before your baby arrives.

C) Third Trimester

It’s still possible to start treatment, but you may have more frequent medical appointments and may not want additional visits. If you’re already in treatment, no problem — we’ll help manage it around your schedule.

2. Are There Any Risks or Side Effects?

While Invisalign is safe, pregnancy-related hormonal changes can affect your gums and teeth. You might notice:

Increased gum sensitivity or swelling

Mild bleeding during brushing or flossing

Changes in saliva production

These can make wearing aligners slightly less comfortable at times, but they don’t interfere with the effectiveness of the treatment. Maintaining excellent oral hygiene and visiting your dentist regularly during pregnancy is especially important.

3. What If I’m Already in Treatment and Then Get Pregnant?

No worries! If you become pregnant during your Invisalign treatment, we’ll continue to monitor your progress carefully and make any adjustments needed to ensure you remain comfortable.

We’ll also coordinate with your dentist and GP if there are any special medical considerations.

4. Are X-rays and Scans Safe During Pregnancy?

In most cases, yes. Dental X-rays used in orthodontics are very low in radiation and considered safe during pregnancy — especially when proper shielding is used. However, they’re usually avoided during the first trimester unless absolutely necessary.

Modern 3D scans, like the iTero scanner, are radiation-free and completely safe. They simply take a digital image of your teeth and are often used for planning Invisalign treatment.

5. Our Final Advice

Pregnancy shouldn’t stop you from achieving the smile you’ve always wanted. In fact, many mums tell us that Invisalign is a positive, confidence-boosting experience — even during such a busy life stage.

As long as your oral health is in good shape and you’re happy with the commitment of daily wear, Invisalign can be a great option during pregnancy.
