Retention is the most important part of orthodontic treatment. Without a proper retention programme, all your hard work can be undone! That’s why every orthodontic treatment at Confident Orthodontics comes with a free custom retainer.

Why do I have to wear a retainer?

After orthodontic treatment, your teeth will want to slide back into their original positions. A retainer will hold them in alignment and protect them from shifting. You need to follow Dr Griffith’s instructions carefully to ensure you keep your straight smile for life.

You will be asked to wear your retainer every night for up to 12 months at first, but once directed, you will be able to reduce the wear to 5 nights a week.

Types of retainers we offer

At Confident Orthodontics, we offer two types of retainers: fixed retainers and removable retainers.

Fixed retainers are thin metal wired that we bond to the back of your teeth. You won’t have to worry about losing a fixed retainer, but you will need to take extra care to properly clean around it. Our dental hygienist can help you learn how.
Removable retainers look a bit like Invisalign^® clear aligners. They are custom made to fit your exact smile, and pop over your upper and lower teeth. You can take your removable retainers out for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing.

How to care for your retainer

If you have removable retainers, you need to take special care of them to ensure they work properly. We advise you to:

Wear your retainers exactly as instructed.
Put your retainers in their case whenever you remove them.
Never wrap your retainers in a napkin – it’s very easy to throw them out by accident.
Clean your retainers regularly with lukewarm water and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
Keep your retainers away from pets – they love to chew on them!
Never put your retainers in the dishwasher or any other hot area, as it can warp the plastic.
Contact our team immediately if your retainers become damaged or lost so we can issue another set (additional charges may apply).
