Young Smiles Learning with Confidence

Confident schools programme

Our schools programme is designed to help students achieve a confident smile without impacting on school life. We leave nothing to chance, our highly trained clinicians provide the very best in orthodontic technology, whilst our support team liaise with parents and the school to make sure that the treatment progresses without a hitch, transforming self-conscious youngsters into self-aware and confident young people. Whether you are a keen musician or sportsman we can provide the best treatment option for you. For the sporty pupil, we can provide gumshields that fit over your braces and once your treatment is complete we can make you a custom made gumshield providing maximum comfort and protection.

How The Programme Works…

In association with your school we will run a series of consultations throughout the academic year. By liaising directly with the pupil’s parents/medical centre/school we can better manage appointment dates to ensure minimum disruption. Appointments can be made and checked through our reception. Regular progress reports and appointment reminders can be sent directly to parents via email. And by arranging a payment programme that suits your needs, we can alleviate cost constraints and concerns.

Young Patients’ Questions Answered…

When should I first visit my orthodontist? Treatment commonly starts at secondary school age, once all the permanent teeth have erupted. Your mouth will be examined, impressions of your teeth will be taken, and we may also take X-rays and/or photographs of them. This will be followed up by a consultation with your orthodontist to consider your treatment options and agree with you on the next course of action.

What about extractions? Advances in treatment methods mean that extractions are needed less frequently. If you need extractions to make space we will liaise with your dentist.

Will treatment be painful? Fitting a brace, for example, is not painful, but teeth and gums often ache as the teeth start to adjust to their new positions. Cheeks can initially be sore until they accustom to a brace, and for a little while after each adjustment. If necessary take your usual painkillers until things settle down.

What about dental check-ups during orthodontic treatment? Continuing with them is a must! The orthodontist only looks after the braces. Your teeth are more vulnerable during orthodontic treatment and therefore it is vital you keep up regular contact with your own dentist.

Adults’ Questions Answered…

School age children and pupils make up the vast majority of orthodontic patients and as such treatment may impact on your children/pupils during educational day, you may find the following helpful…

What does orthodontic treatment entail? Orthodontic treatment is carried out with braces of various types. Some simple movements of the teeth can be achieved using removable appliances (worn full time), which commonly interfere with speech for a day or two, prolonged issues may be a sign of intermittent wear. More complicated appliances, which engage with both upper and lower teeth, used to correct the growth of the jaws are often employed earlier.

Why so many appointments? Several appointments may be required initially to assess the problem, take records, arrange for any extractions and fit the appliances. Subsequently the patient will need to be seen every 6-8 weeks to have adjustments carried out and assess the progress.

How long will the treatment last? Between 15 and 24 months is typical of active treatment. Retainers are then fitted to hold the position of the teeth while they settle.
